On the Sidelines

So, it’s been a while.

I’d love to say that it was because I was running around doing exciting things, but unfortunately, it was more because I got caught by the flu.

If there’s something I always advocate for with writing, it’s doing it as often as possible. Because once you stop and fall out of your routine, it’s SO difficult to come back and pick up where you left off.

I was writing regularly. Every day, a new exciting moment came from my fingertips to the keyboard.

Then, health problems knocked me down for a bit. After that, it was like, “What do I say?” “Where do I start?” “How do I find that motivation again?”

We all go through it. If it’s not health problems, it’s writer’s block or lack of motivation. Or maybe we’re just too busy and exhausted to even think about it.

But as with any craft or hobby or skill, you have practice to get better. You have to keep moving forward, or you go backward.

I made a goal yesterday. I told myself that I was going to write a blog post today. It didn’t matter if I had a ton to say or a creative blast. I had to write. I had to sit down in front of this computer and put some words in this blog.

So, here we are. I’m rambling on about nothingness except that life is sometimes difficult. And more than that, sometimes it just really sucks.

But as writers, it can feel even more difficult because we see our work, our ideas, slipping away. We try to catch it, but sometimes we’re just not fast enough. So, we watch it go.

It’s a vicious cycle.

But what I can say is, no matter how long you’re away, your story will wait for you.

It is not a fickle lover or a too-busy friend. It loyal to you, and when you come back for it, your story will light the fire inside you once again.

So, take a breath. You’re doing great. Even if you’re just getting by, you’re still getting by!

Don’t beat yourself up for not writing enough or regularly. You do you, and we’ll all be here waiting for the words you send our way.

Because we’re a community. We support one another because we know how it feels. And that’s what makes it all okay. We know life gets you down, but reach out! Write! And we’ll be on your sidelines cheering you on.

Happy Writing!

  1. There’s probably nothing worse then health problems. I’m currently located in China, waiting for the nCoV epidemic to stabilize. Writing is all I can do, while we hunker down indoors. Life is funny sometimes. Hopefully by the time you read this, you’ll be feeling a lot better in your part of the world!
